Chronology of cameras Thornton Pickard
The Thornton Pickard All Weather Press cameras were amongst the most successful press cameras in the UK in the 1920s and early 1930s. It was advertised as being waterproof. Thornton Pickard had a strong reputation in making shutters since the 1890s. The TP (All Weather) Press Camera appeared in the early 1920s (derived from the early TP Unita from circa 1911) and lasted until mid 1930s when strut folding cameras faded, and new concepts evolved and progressively took over their market niche.
It is a solidly built camera covered in black leather, with an optical foldable viewfinder at the top. The focal plane shutter delivers speeds in the range 1/15 to 1/1000 seconds plus T. The lens is a Ross Xpres of 136mm of focal length and maximum aperture of 4.5.
This specimen is from around 1929-1930 when the shutter knob became domed. Later cameras would have speeds down to 3 seconds. It is designed for quarter-plate size (3 ¼ x 4 ¼’’).
